Sherlock’s so pleased with himself as he starts to deduce, here, but he’s the only one in the room that doesn’t know what’s really going on. John and Greg try to save him from himself but he leaps over them, gleefully performing his favorite trick at Molly’s expense. Perhaps he thinks she’ll be impressed with him, as John always is, because he knows she has feelings for him. It’s telling, though, that when he realizes he’s not only struck a nerve but stepped in it - hard - his remorse throws him off completely.
I think that’s why Molly doesn’t hold his truly hateful behavior against him. He’s a prick, but he’s not of this world. When it comes to mundane matters that he doesn’t comprehend - like love - he does what little he can to cover his tracks, because he’s fundamentally a decent human being.
